Like sapphire, ruby is the second hardest mineral on earth. Rubies usually have small inclusions, clear rubies are very rare and achieve very high values that can even exceed the prices of the top diamonds. In the past, rubies from Burma dominated the market almost exclusively. Today specimens from Mozambique and Madagascar are also predominant on the market.
Other large sites are in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Tanzania.
